Types and choices of TFT module interface

A TFT LCD display module consists of LCD panel, COG (chip on glass) or COB (chip on board) ,driver ICs, backlight and interface. There are several TFT display interface technologies. Including LVDS, (low voltage difference signal) parallel, SPI (serial peripheral interface) RGB and so on. The following is an introduction to various interfaces.

TFT LCD interface

Usually the TFT interface is mainly determined by the specific TFT panel size and resolution.

SPI LCD interface

The serial peripheral interface allows serial (one bit at a time) data exchange between two devices. Compared with parallel, one of its advantages is simple connection. SPI can also be connected to longer cables because there is less interaction or crosstalk in the cables. The disadvantage of SPI is that you cannot read from the TFT LCD display, only write, and the speed is very slow. This is why we usually see small size TFT LCD displays with SPI interface.

MCU parallel interface

Many modern MCUs have built-in LCD controller functions, and there are 2 types, 6800 and 8080. Usually MCU/parallel interface is composed of data signal (4/8/9/16 bit) and control signal. The MCU interface is simple, but requires display RAM.

RGB interface

The RGB interface is a special parallel interface that does not require display RAM. The MCU directly updates the TFT screen and sends red, green and blue pixel data (16/18/24 bits) and time signals. The RBG interface can communicate with TFT LCD with high speed , but it requires more data lines and control is more complicated.

LVDS interface

low-voltage differential signal is a special data signal standard. LVDS interface equipment can communicate at high speed through cheap twisted-pair copper-clad cables, which can reduce electromagnetic interference and serial interference problems, transmission equipment location It can be far away from the TFT LCD display.

UART/RS232/RS485

The Universal Asynchronous Receiver and Transmitter (UART) is the circuit area responsible for serial communication. In essence, UART plays the role of serial and The medium between parallel interfaces, one end of the UART is a bus composed of about 8 data lines (plus some control pins), and the other end is two serial lines-RX and TX.
